«Quality prevails in Celler de Capçanes»

Journalist Sascha Brandenburg presents Celler de Capçanes in the German magazine TodoVino. This is a chronicle of his visit to our winery and the Priorat region, “a must-see”. Brandenburg traces our history within the framework of the town of Capçanes, highlighting the production of certified kosher wines as a quality trigger.

Celler de Capçanes is a different cooperative”, Brandenburg states, not only because quality prevails over quantity, but because Celler de Capçanes is a pioneer in Spain in the production of wines with kosher certification.

Celler de Capçanes is one of the few cooperatives where you can spend 100 euros or more on a wine. But most of the great selection are affordable and well-made wines, since “we belong to the people and we make wines for the people, says Jürgen. And that’s better,” explains the journalist, mentioning Jürgen Wagner, export manager at Celler de Capçanes.

In this sense, Brandenburg points out: “Of the approximately 400 inhabitants of the municipality, a large proportion of families depend directly on the cooperative. Celler de Capçanes is not only the largest employer in the town (the cooperative currently has 65 grape supplier members), but also something of the center of social life.”

In his report, Brandenburg traces the history of Celler de Capçanes from its founding in 1933 to the present, focusing on the most representative moments of the cooperative. Thus, the decided commitment to produce wines for the Jewish community and the modernization of the facilities, to direct all production to quality wines: “That was in the early 90s, and in 1996 the first vintage was launched – from Peraj Ha’abib-, which in 1998 was named the third best Spanish wine in the well-known Spanish wine guide Guía Peñín with 96 points.” And he continues: “almost no cooperative in Spain has experienced a rise as great as the Celler de Capçanes. Some creations, such as Cabrida red wine, are regularly among the best wines in Spain. And Celler de Capçanes was recently named Cooperative of the Year 2024 by American wine critic Tim Atkin.

Cabrida, «the best wine from the best cooperative in Catalonia»

«Cabrida comes from very old red Garnacha vines in the D.O. Montsant. The nose is expressive, with floral notes and, on the palate, the ripe red fruits add great flavour. Together with soft tannins and very well-integrated wood, Cabrida was recognised as the Best Wine of Catalonia at the Vinari 2022 awards”: Ferran Centelles, 2024 TAPAS Wine Guide. 94 points.

Under the heading «365 wines to toast all year round», Spain’s 2024 TAPAS Wine Guide has been released. This is a yearly Wine Guide on a selection of Wineries and wines not to miss in the Spanish wine scene by «17 sommeliers of the best restaurants of Spain». The wineries do not interfere in this selection, as the booklet is made with the contribution of renown sommeliers and prescribers, each responsible for a wine region. As such, Ferran Centelles has selected Celler de Capçanes and our Cabrida to figure in the Wine Guide under Catalunya’s region section. Being probably the most internationally reknowned Sommelier of Spain today, Centelles highlights the commitment to quality of Celler de Capçanes, including Cabrida «because it is the best wine from the best cooperative in Catalonia”.

Ferran Centelles states: “Celler de Capçanes is a cooperative to follow, since they organise the members’ vineyards at different levels of quality and potential to achieve great wines in all the quality segments. Numerous recent awards recognise its fabulous positioning”.

MW Pedro Ballesteros Top Scores Celler de Capçanes

With 95 points Cabrida 2022 excels as «one of the best wines in the region».

Peraj Ha’abib 2022 is recalled a «reminiscent of the first wave of great Priorat wines»

Renowned Master of Wine Pedro Ballesteros has highlighted the quality and consistency of our wines in his 2024 Report on the Montsant region. Cabrida outstands in the report as one of the best wines in the region. With 95 points received, Cabrida aligns within the Six Top scored wines of the Montsant region after a blind tasting of wines from all the area.

«Probably the best Cabrida to date, this shows great finesse on both nose and palate. Very well defined, with redcurrant fruit and a joyful raspberry note. Oak is deftly integrated into the wine, being unobtrusive for a round and delicate mouthfeel. Deep and gentle, possibly a little bit warm, with a parsimonious finish. One of the best wines in the region. I hope it will get better with age but see no need not to drink this now».

Peraj Ha’abib 2022 follows with 92 points as «a wine that is reminiscent of the first wave of great Priorat wines, this is powerful, rich, intense, vibrant and warm. Full-bodied, with lots of everything: red fruit, violet, vanilla, toasted nuts. Quite excessive, but very clean and well made. One to drink slowly».

International recognition for Mas Tortó organic wine

Mas Tortó ecologic international organic wine award

The work and effort behind the Mas Tortó 2021 wine has been recognized; Mas Tortó receives a Gold Medal at the prestigious International Organic Award 2023 competition.

Mas Tortó is a very special wine from Celler de Capçanes, made with grapes from very old vines and from 100% organic farming, which has also been certified by the CCPAE organization.

Capçanes moves towards organic (certified!) farming step by step, using techniques that respect organisms and biodiversity in the field, such as the use of pheromones that confuse males and naturally prevent the reproduction of different types of pests, completely avoiding the use of insecticides.

The use of herbicides and fungicides is also avoided, and only indispensable phytosanitary products of mineral origin are used, such as copper or sulfur (which are not absorbed by the plant) and which are the only effective treatment against well-known mildew fungus.

Coupage 2021: 35% Cariñena+ 35% Cabernet Sauvignon + 30% Garnacha

This blend is so characteristic of Priorat and Montsant and makes Mas Tortó a wine with a good body and high aromatic intensity, with a fine tannin but well present in the mouth, balanced with notes of ripe fruit and a sweet touch of vanilla and chocolate from the aging in barrels. A delight!

Costers del Gravet 2020, Gold at Concours International de Lyon

Is it because of the style, because of the aging in French barrels… or is it the blend influenced by Cabernet Sauvignon? We always say that “Costers del Gravet” is our most “Frenchized” wine with a style reminiscent of a typical Bordeaux red wine, with a generous body and peppery vegetal notes so typical of the Cabernet Sauvignon variety.

Be that as it may, Costers del Gravet has been the great winner of Capçanes before the jury of the International Concours de Lyon, obtaining a Gold medal for the 2020 vintage.

Costers del Gravet is an elegant, classic aged red wine, with generous body and great aromatic intensity, a true representative from D.O Montsant and Celler de Capçanes.

The origin of this estate wine is a single plot of land in the Llaberia valley, near the village of Capçanes. Quality in the world of wine is almost always marked by the location of its vineyards and the guarantee of origin, which in this case is total. The wine is presented with 3 labels, each of them containing old purchase-sale contracts of this same estate, signed by the religious authority of the town. A true testament to the generational shift.

  • Lasendal 2020: GOLD MEDAL. It is the most honest expression of a D.O Montsant wine with a modern style, with a fresh, delicious and aromatic Grenache. We call it, the «baby Cabrida».

FRANK SMULDERS, MASTER OF WINES, 2020

The Master of Wine, Frank Smulders, has recently tasted and reviewed three of our most premium wines.

MAS TORTO 2017 Vinyes Velles: this old vine Garnacha dominated blend (70%) also contains Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, and aged for 14 months in large oak vessels. A bright, intense ruby color. The nose focused and lively with ripe red and blanc fruits (cherries, plums), black pepper and sweet spice, and high-quality oak, modestly on the background. A full-bodied wine with sufficient acidity to balance the sturdy 15% alcohol, a silky tannic structure and an overall deliciously rich texture ending in a long-lasting finish. Excellent winemaking showing very precisely its origins.

90 points

ELS PAJAROS 2017: fully based on very old Cariñena vineyards. Very deep purple color.  An intense nose truly representative of the variety, with a complex spicy, vegetal nose with oak well integrated and remaining at the background. Very intense on the palate with high alcohol (warm but not sweet), vibrant acidity and firm yet perfectly ripe, pleasantly grippy tannins. Black fruits all over (bramble, plum, cherry and blueberry), a vegetal note (bellpepper), clear and present oak, excellent length with a salty, mineral touch. A wine that needs more time.

90 points

CABRIDA Terroir Calissa 2017: very old vine Garnacha from a limestone soil above the village.  Less deeply colored, more garnet than ruby. Nose showing strength with sweet red fruits (cherries especially), the alcohol noticeable and complex, spicy aromas like thyme, licorice, black pepper, cinnamon and rosemary. A rich palate with silky tannins, lots of juicy fruits, some alcoholic sweetness but with a surprisingly fresh, balanced finish with precisely ripe, lightly grippy and very attractive tannins providing some tension. Delicious as well as beautiful!

James Suckling – $15 WINES THAT TASTE LIKE $50

Our La Nit de les Garnatxes «Slate» 2016 has been recently picked as one of Spain’s Best Value wines on James Suckling article of $15 WINES THAT TASTE LIKE $50.

«Plenty of flowers and wild herbs in the most sophisticated of this terroir series from an excellent cooperative winery. This medium-to full-bodied grenache has elegantly dry tannins that push the crisp finish along at a brisk clip.»

Not only it is a wine under 15$ that tastes like one above 50$, but also has been given 93 points! We are humbled and excited to share these results with you. Salut!

BLIND TASTED 2019 – Andreas Larsson

Mas Tortó 2016: 91p

Dark purple core. The nose is youthful but layered with plenty of ripe dark fruit like cherry, cassis, plum
with tobacco and fine leather. Dense palate, but still with a modest extraction and rounded tannin, generous
and bold fruitiness with good ripeness, a fresh acidity underneath and a long warm finish.

Jeb Dunnuck – April 2019

Mas Donís Old Vines 2016: 94 points

The finest vintage of this cuvée to date, the 2016 Mas Donis Old Vines is 85% Garnacha and 15% Syrah that was 70% destemmed and aged primarily in concrete. Tasting like a top Priorat with its beautiful blue fruits, violets, ground  pepper, rose petals, and amble minerality, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, remarkable purity of fruit, and a great, great finish. Almost too good to be true, just pretend you paid more.

European Cellars, April 3rd 2019

Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge 2019

  • Peraj Ha’abib 2017: GOLD – Fine dark hue, purple tinges. Classy, deep nose combining black fruits, new oak, liquorice and graphite. Well-crafted palate, ample and remarkably mellow on the attack and persisting in the same vein on the firmer mid-palate and finish. Great potential.
  • Mas Collet 2017: GOLD – Full, purple-tinged colour. Deep, warm nose redolent of black fruit and very ripe stone fruit. The palate goes for a virile, very extracted, over-ripe style, concluding on a more tannic note. It will benefit from cellaring.
  • Lasendal 2017: GOLD – Full ruby, little development. Fine nose introducing notes of black fruit, graphite and mild spice. Splendidly concentrated on the palate, tight-textured with lovely ripe tannin. A very demonstrative and persistent offering.
  • La Nit de les Garnatxes Slate 2017: GOLD – Dark ruby, immature appearance. Expansive nose of small red fruit, then after aeration shows real complexity, with fine mineral, spicy and slightly toasted notes. Full attack, delicately but generously structured and deliciously fresh. Compelling wine.
  • La Nit de les Garnatxes Clay 2017: GOLD – Full ruby, immature. Deep nose of red fruit, orange flesh and a whiff of grey pepper. Rich, ample – even opulent – palate, with ripe well-coated tannin. Good all-round structure, getting firmer on the finish. Positively virile for a Grenache.
  • La Nit de les Garnatxes Sand 2017: GOLD – Medium-full colour. Fine nose of fresh red fruit and stone fruit on a mineral and slightly saline base. Supple-textured on the palate and deliciously rich, brimming with luscious fruit, good refeshing cut and still that spicy and mineral dimension.
  • La Nit de les Garnatxes Limestone 2017: GOLD – Medium-deep ruby. Engaging nose intermixing red fruit and subtle vegetal and spicy touches over a floral backing. Not particularly full on the palate, but has deliciously tight, fine texture and well-judged freshness. Elegant style.
  • Mas Picosa (De flor en flor) 2018: GOLD – Full, violet-tinged ruby. Enticing, immature nose of red and black berry fruit with floral and vegetal touches. Rounded, fleshy entry, vibrantly fruity, then becomes a little firmer and more vegetal on the follow-through. Deliciously quaffable.

Concentrated yet digest with good drinkability.

Peraj Ha’abib 2016: 91p. Rather deep red colour with a purple hue. Youthful intense and ripe nose offering ripe plum, blackberry, cassis, tobacco and fine spices with a hint of new oak. James Suckling tasting 2018

Peraj Ha’abib, Flor de Primavera Kosher 2016:  95p. Just beginning to mature, this has a very complex nose of spice, licorice and hot stones, as well as great black fruit. Concentration, warmth and drive in this rich red that has a very long, polished finish. Kosher wine. Drink or hold.

Cabrida 2016: 94p. Joyful nose of fresh raspberries, summer flowers and a hint of clove. Concentrated ripe fruit, beautifully crafted tannins that sit so neatly within this wide frame. Great balance of sweet and dry, warm and cool elements. Delicious now, but with very good aging potential.

Costers del Gravet 2015: 94p. A stunning nose with the whole spectrum of black fruit, from cassis through cherry to plum, but also delicate herbal notes. A rich and ripe red with polished tannins carrying the long finish. On the cusp of greatness. A blend of grenache, carignan and cabernet sauvignon. Drink or hold.

Mas Picosa de Flor en Flor 2017:  93p. Very dark nose with tons of black cherries and plums plus a hint of bitter chocolate, but a freshness that pulls you into the powerful and quite concentrated palate, where the generous, soft tannins are beautifully integrated. Long, powdery finish. Delicious now, but should hold through at least 2024.

La Nit de les Garnatxes Slate/Llicorella 2016: 93p. Plenty of flowers and wild herbs in the most sophisticated of this terroir series from an excellent cooperative winery. This medium-to full-bodied grenache has elegantly dry tannins that push the crisp finish along at a brisk clip.

La Nit de les Garnatxes Clay/Argila 2016: 92p. I love the crushed wild-berry aromas with some floral notes, but also the deep, earthy quality. Then comes the great velvety texture on the ripe, but well-proportioned palate, the well-crafted dry tannins making the finish lively. Drink or hold.

La Nit de les Garnatxes Sand/Panal 2016: 92p. This smells of the blackest forest berries with just a hint of anise. A dark, well structured grenache with dry, but rather fine tannins and a long, bright finish. Drink or hold.

La Nit de les Garnatxes Limestone/Calissa 2016: 92p. Very charming and floral, medium-bodied grenache with a gracefulness and delicacy that carries through the long finish. Drink or hold.

Mas Collet Selecció 2016: 91p. Bold, black fruit, balanced by generous, supple tannins, making this an easy red to enjoy. But it also has some real depth with notes of licorice and earth adding some complexity to the nose and the long finish. Drink now or hold.

Peraj Petita Kosher 201790p. Lots of blackberries, some flowers and licorice on the nose. In spite of the generous ripeness, it’s quite dry and slightly sappy on the palate. Good, but not amazing depth. A very good food-wine. Drink now or hold.

Wine Advocate 2018

Mas Donis Old Vines 2015: 90p.«The 2015 Mas Donis Old Vines is the custom cuvée for the US market. It’s mostly Garnacha with some Syrah fermented separately in stainless steel with some 50% full clusters followed by malolactic in concrete and bottled after 80% of the wine matured in French oak barrels for nine months. Of course, 2015 is a warm and dry vintage, and the wine shows the character of the year, in a nice way, with peachy and floral rather than pruney aromas. It’s a very good value, and it’s also juicy and approachable and serious enough for more sophisticated consumers.»

Mas Donis old vines 2015: 92 points.«The deep ruby/purple colored 2015 Mas Donis Old Vines is billed as a poor man’s Priorat from Importer Eric Solomon and I certainly can’t disagree with him. Blackberries, blueberries, peppery, hints of violets and some minerality all emerge from this juicy, ripe, sexy red that’s an undeniable joy to drink. The wine is a blend of 85% Garnacha and 15%Syrah, brought up all in concrete tanks».

The wine advocate 2016

Cabrida 2014: 92 Points. The 2014 Cabrida already shows the new direction for the estate—especially for 2015—towards finer, more complex and delicate wines with judicious use of oak and more fruit-driven and fresh. Those seem like deep changes, and this pure old vine Garnacha is the blend of many micro-vinifications in open 500-liter oak barrels with some floral and wild berry aromas, and a core of sweet spices and earth. The palate is quite delicate, with a fine texture, with chalky tannins and good freshness.

Mas Donis old vines 2014: 90 Points. It’s a mini-Rhône blend of Garnacha with some 15% Syrah from old vines matured exclusively in concrete. The nose is like Garnacha cotton candy with red fruit and a touch of smoked meat. The tannins are soft and the texture is silky, ending with a very tasty note.

La Nit dels Garnatxes Calissa 2015: 88 Points. The wine is intensely fruity and young, with a bit of a raw nose reminiscent of young must. It’s fresh and straightforward, with fine tannins and good freshness.

«It seems like some deep changes have happened at the cooperative of Capçanes with a new technical team and a new direction towards finer, more complex and delicate wines with judicious use of oak, fruit-driven and fresher.»

Eric Asimov, The New York Times October 2016

…»Priorat has a less expensive neighbor, Montsant, which offers wines made from a similar set of grapes that can be quite delicious in their own right. The relationship of Priorat and Montsant is not unlike that of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas.»

«Celler de Capçanes, in Montsant, has been producing the La Flor del Flor Garnacha since 2007.This is an outstanding wine from grapevines that are over 100 years old, a feature that improves the quality and complexity of the wines produced. No matter how delicious the food is or if it is hot or cold in the Sukkah, this delicate, classy wine stands out as the shining star. One can only think about how beautiful and delicious a wine this is to enjoy under the s’chach.»

Mas Donis Barrica 2012 : (Red) Rating: 94p

Another baby Priorato, the 2012 Mas Donis, a custom cuvée from Eric Solomon, is composed of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah aged nine months in both new and used French and American oak. The Grenache comes from 70-year-old vines, and the Syrah from 30-year-old vines. It is difficult to find a better value than this incredibly rich effort. The bouquet offers up a smorgasbord of aromas, including crushed rocks, spring flowers, kirsch liqueur and blacker fruits. Full-bodied with a velvety, voluptuous texture, and admirable opulence, density, purity and texture, it is nearly impossible to believe that something this good could be priced at $12 a bottle. Consume it over the next ye

Jancis Robinson «A Catalan Collection»

2v/b 2009, 17p: Deep pinkish gold. Orange peel and tang plus great depth and concentration. Lots to chew on. Very firm and structured – no flab whatsoever. Really interesting and the alcohol is well covered.Drink 2013- 2017 • £30 RRP 17

Capçanes Mas Donis Rosat 2013, 16p: Rather lurid pale raspberry colour. Chock full of fruit reined in. Definitely ends dry. A light clarete with lots of local character. Definitely recommended for drinking with food.Drink 2014- • £7.99 Little Wine Club

Capçanes Mas Collet 2011, 16.5p: Blend of Garnacha with Cabernet and Tempranillo and Uncle Tom Cobley. All oak aged. Neat garnet. Brilliant amount of fruit, integrity and character per penny. Great dry but not drying finish after more than a hint of llicorella! Real structure. Tastes far more expensive. VGV. Drink 2014- 2018 • £10 Theatre of Wine

Capçanes Peraj Petita 2012, 16p: Kosher cuvée all in tank. Mainly Garnacha and Cabernet. Sweet and fruity – a bit simple and chewy. Not nearly as captivating as the 2011 Mas Collet. But more character and artisan character than most kosher wines at this price.Drink 2015- 2017 • £11.99 Berry Bros & Rudd, Virgin Wines

Capçanes 2 Pájaros 2012, 16+p:  100% Samso (Cariñena). Broad and rich on the nose with deeply buried chestnut notes. Still quite young and embryonic. Rather pinched on the finish. Bracing at the moment!Drink 2016- 2022

Capçanes Cabrida Calissa 2010, 16p:  Limestone. Round and fresh with real lift. Racy and nervy. Chewy.Drink 2015- 2020 • £58 Berry Bros & Rudd

Capçanes Cabrida 2011, 17.5p: Old Garnacha with a year in French barriques. Warm and rich on the nose but with real refreshment on the palate. More sinewy than a typical Châteauneuf. Refined. Recalls the David Sadie Grenache a bit. Fine and muscular. Amazingly persistent.Drink 2014- 2020 • £29 Berry Bros & Rudd, Little Wine Club

Tim’s Tasting Notes

Peraj Ha’abib (2012): 92p. This is a complex blend of old vine Garnacha with Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan (Samsó) from one of the best cooperatives in Spain. Think of it as a mini-Priorat, but at a slightly lower price. Plum, spice and chocolate-like flavours are appealingly intertwined here, with the Cabernet adding some leafy freshness to the herbal, earthy Mediterranean flavours. The minerality and the acidity keep the wine fresh, despite its comparatively high alcohol.

Mas Collet Barrica(2011): 90p. An oak-aged blend of Garnacha, Tempranillo, Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Capçanes co-operative that shows why Montsant is such a good value alternative to neighbouring Priorat. The oak is just a top note here, despite the name of the wine, adding complexity to the flavours of plum, cassis and hot stones. The wine finishes with a dry, mineral flourish that ties it all together, like a bow on a gift-wrapped present.

Costers del Gravet 2011 Montsant 17/20 Drink 2014-2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnatxa, Carinyena. From 25-40 years old vines planted in Capçanes and Guiamets. Harvest takes place in October. 12 months in French oak barrels. Retail price €12. Capçanes is a quality driven co-operative that dates back to 1933. Their wines flood restaurants in Catalunya and wine professionals feel really proud of them. The wine is modern in style, hedonistic, easy to enjoy, juicy and super pleasant. Quite straightforward in aroma with concentrated blueberry fruit. More voluminous and spectacular than long and complex. Lots of concentration, lots of fruit, lots of wine. Am I tasting Priorat? GV (FC) 14.5% €12 RRP

Mas Collet 2011 Montsant 15/20 Drink 2014-2015 Garnatxa, Carinyena, Ull de Llebre, Cabernet Sauvignon. 15-30 year old vines at 200-400 m. Diversity of vineyards from Capçanes and Guiamets. Germany: Pansal del Calàs… a new star in the Spain sweet wine’s history… Celler de Capçanes, nowadays the best cooperative in Spain…

«Yossie’s Corkboard», May 2012

This week’s newsletter discusses one of my all-time favorite wineries – Capcanes of Spain. Despite much love for this delightful winery, having enjoyed its kosher vintages starting with 1998; I have never dedicated a newsletter to the winery and its history. While many acclaimed non-kosher vineyards around the world make kosher cuvees of certain wines in limited runs, Capcanes is unique in that it was its kosher cuvee that initially put it on the map. Located in the village of Capcanes in Spain’s Montsant region a close neighbor of Spain’s famed Priorat, the Capcanes winery was founded as a cooperative by five local wine-growing families in 1933.

«Juan Fernádez- Cuesta», Diario ABC, Mayo, 2012, Spain

Vino kosher, pura belleza. Pura belleza.

Wine Behind the label

7th Edition, by David Moore, UK:

One of Spain´s finest co-operatives…it is also among the best in Europe. Flor de Primavera – kosher – has evolved into a splendid blend and the range of reds here is now extensive and very impressive… Among the best wines are two ripe, berry- fruited styles, Mas Collet and Mas Donís, both having a big dollop of Garnacha.

…Mas Tortó and Cabrida, are both massively extracted, dense and powerful reds…very impressive and ageworthly.

All of the wines offer excellent value for money.

The new Spanish wave: “Flor de Primavera”

A selection of great Spanish values: “Mas Tortó”
